Celebrating Our First Birthday

In April, we celebrated a year of supporting great autism research and sharing research findings with clinicians and families.

In just one short year, we have funded outstanding autism science that has the potential to change the way we think about diagnosing and treating autism. We have awarded our first round of predoctoral grants in early diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology, and genetics. We are providing scholarships to autism stakeholders including parents, siblings, medical students, and special education teachers.

Our highly trafficked website provides daily news about the latest autism research to families. We are frequently called upon to participate in major media reports on autism issues.

Our board members and volunteers are actively working with families who have received an autism diagnosis to make sure they find the path to progress.

Our unwavering commitment to evidence-based science has earned us the respect of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control.

The Autism Science Foundation offers donors the most effective way to get their contributions to the scientists whose work will make a difference in people’s lives. We truly make every dollar count.

Mother’s Day Brunch Celebrates Special Needs Families

On May 9, the Autism Science Foundation and the Jewish Community Center of MidWestchester (JCC) joined forces to honor families raising children with special needs at the Celebrating Families: Mother’s Day Brunch. The event honored Nancy Kaplan, Linda Helfman and Charley Moskowitz of the JCC. The event raised over $30,000 to support autism education and research programs. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Serving Up Science and Sandwiches at IMFAR

Autism Science Foundation held a special version of its popular Science and Sandwiches bimonthly lunch at IMFAR, showcasing research funded by the Autism Science Foundation. The event brought together over 100 scientists, advocates, individuals with autism, and family members. Science and Sandwiches included presentations from six of ASF’s predoctoral students who spoke about their latest work. It is this research that will make a difference for children, teens, and adults with autism. We are so honored to be part of this important scientific work.

Offering Educational Opportunities to Parents and Students

In 2010, the Autism Science Foundation awarded eight grants to autism stakeholders to enable them to attend the International Meeting for Autism Research 2010 (IMFAR) in Philadelphia, May 20–22. Each grant recipient brought back critical information on new research to his or her community. For example, Stephanie Millman (an undergraduate at Columbia University) organized a post-IMFAR autism research week at Columbia, bringing scientists she had met at IMFAR to campus to present about their work and speak to students.

We recently closed our application process for the 2011 Autism Science Foundation pre- and postdoctoral fellowships. We received almost fifty proposals for work ranging from genetics and animal models, to treatment, services and delivery.
